Hi! I'm Isabel. I am a strategic and urban designer interested in exploring creative actions for social change, overcome socio-economic disparities and build agency through design.
With a background in community planning, urbanism and architecture my recent practice is focused on developing strategies of open-decision making to empower communities to shape their built environment.
I am interested in building pedagogic and advocacy tools that increase our capacities to be agents of change. These tools have taken the form of urban plans, community driven designs, participatory visioning sessions, critical maps, infographics and data visualization. Please visit my projects for more information.
I strongly believe that design thinking can bridge topics not yet linked and contribute to greater justice.
I was born in Colombia, a country that has been in an armed conflict for more than 50 years. The causes of the conflict are rooted in the vast socio economic disparities. This has motivated me devote my carrier to inform urban plannnig through an equity approach.
I earned a Magna Cum Laude Professional degree in Architecture -from Universidad de Los Andes, Bogota, Col-. I traveled to Koshirakura, Japan to build public space interventions that explored forms of social and cultural sustainability -with the Architectural Association in London-. Following my endless curiosity I pursued an MS in Design and Urban Ecologies at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. Since I graduated I've had the opportunity to work with communities in Detroit, Tallahassee and New York.
